Don't extrapolate slower growth. There's no mistaking the slowing in incoming US economic indicators, ranging from past consumer spending and income to employment and forward-looking orders. And we are mindful of the downside risks to growth, noted below. But extrapolating the recent deceleration in the economy into still-slower growth would be a mistake, in our view. Instead, we see a moderate pickup ahead, with the 2Q downshift marking the transition to a period of unspectacular 3-3.5% growth.

Treasuries posted decent further gains in the intermediate and short ends of the curve over the past week and small losses in the long end after the weaker-than-expected employment report led investors to continue pricing out any significant Fed tightening for a very long time and moving into the parts of the curve that look most attractive on a carry and rolldown perspective in such a scenario. At Tuesday's FOMC meeting, there reportedly will be a focus on deciding what, if anything, to do about principal repayments on the Fed's huge portfolio of mortgage-backed securities, which peaked a few weeks ago and has started to run off at the pace of about $20 billion a month. After the somewhat disappointing employment report, we think it's a close call whether the FOMC will decide to let this continue for now or announce a decision to start reinvesting MBS principal repayments in Treasuries.

Υπολογίζουν άραγε οι Ελληνες πολιτικοί το «πολιτικό κόστος» με τρόπο διαφορετικό από εκείνον των Ευρωπαίων συναδέλφων τους; Το ερώτημα αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα επίκαιρο, καθώς η οικονομική κρίση, που διέρχεται η χώρα, επανέφερε τη συζήτηση για τις αποτυχίες και τις καθυστερήσεις του παρελθόντος. Πολλοί ξένοι αναλυτές κατηγόρησαν τις ελληνικές πολιτικές ηγεσίες ότι υπήρξαν πολύ άτολμες και πολύ φοβισμένες για να εφαρμόσουν τις μεταρρυθμίσεις που είχε ανάγκη η πατρίδα τους. Εχει επίσης υποστηριχθεί ότι οι Ελληνες πολιτικοί υπήρξαν συνήθως προσκολλημένοι σε μικροκομματικούς υπολογισμούς. Είναι δίκαιη αυτή η κριτική;

Πολλοί σύγχρονοι επιστήμονες και ερευνητές σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο προβληματίζονται γύρω από τη δυνατότητα την οποία δίνει το σύγχρονο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα σε δημιουργικές προσωπικότητες να αναλάβουν ηγετικές θέσεις στην επιστημονική κοινότητα και την πανεπιστημιακή ιεραρχία. Δυστυχώς πρόσφατες παρατηρήσεις και στατιστικές δείχνουν ότι το εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα τείνει να απορρίψει χαρισματικά παιδιά με υψηλό δείκτη νοημοσύνης, φαντασία και πρωτότυπη σκέψη, ενώ αντίθετα τείνει να αναπαράγει μετριότητες με προγνώσιμα όρια επιδόσεων και εύκολη προσαρμογή στην εκπαιδευτική διαδικασία.
